Hammond is full of so much, I don't know if it can fit in one page!
First of all, please visit the College Bound Program link below to see a one of a kind offering-- a full ride to college for Hammond's high school graduates! Hammond, Indiana is just south of Chicago and neighbors to Illinois, Whiting, Gary, East Chicago, Highland and Munster. The Hammond Mohawks club has dedicated a chicken dinner every fall to raise money and canned goods to support the local shelters and food pantries to make Hammond a better place.
Most notably, in my mind at least, Hammond is the home of A Christmas Story, by Jean Shepard. One of our favorite movies growing up in our home, I really didn't realize this was based on a family in Hammond, Indiana! During the winter months, the visitor's center (see link below) hosts a "Christmas Story" Exhibit that is free and a must see for anyone who needs a little Christmas spirit or cheering up.
Downtown Hammond has been home to the Beatlesfest in the late summer, an all day music festival with local bands celebrating the music of The Beatles. Its family friendly, but there is a beer garden! Local vendors, food, games for children, and just an all around good time!
In terms of travel, the South Shore train has a stop in East Chicago and in North Hammond, which is convenient for most parts of the region. The South Shore train runs at regular intervals and offers multiple stops until its end at Randolph & Michigan Avenue. For the commuter, its an easy decision...why drive downtown and deal with the headache, when you can read, visit with friends, knit, or just relax.
